Known as the "Crossroads of Australia", Port Augusta was established in 1854 on the northern tip of Spencer Gulf, Port Augusta quickly developed into one of South Australia's major ports for wool, minerals and wheat, with regular shipping until 1973.
The Wadlata Outback Centre and the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden are both great tourist attractions and offer amazing insights into the cultural and natural wonders of the region and beyond.
The city is now a major tourist, shopping, government and commercial centre, with The Ghan stopping here on its transcontinental rail journey from Adelaide to Darwin and other major industries including the ETSA powerhouse and Southern Rail.
As befitting a city of approx 15,000 people, Port Augusta has extensive shopping facilities, varied accommodation and services including a cinema, many sports clubs and a boat ramp for fishing and yachting. Scenic Gulf Tours operate seven days a week. If you need a boat you can hire one or have a game of golf.
The Wadlata Outback Centre and The Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden. Both are major highlights for visitors plus the Royal Flying Doctor Service base, Curdnatta Art and Pottery Gallery, Homestead Park Pioneer Museum, Fountain Gallery, Pichi Richi Railway, many lookouts, self drive town tour and a heritage walk are also a must to visit.
