Education

Whyalla is well served with educational facilities, with the most notable being the only non-Adelaide based university campus in South Australia. Whyalla students can gain a broad education from primary school to university without leaving the City.

Institutions

The City's educational facilities are listed below, those marked with an asterisk* are private schools.

University of South Australia, Whyalla Campus

The Whyalla campus of the University of South Australia is the only regionally based campus of the 5 UniSA campuses. It represents the major centre of tertiary education in rural South Australia. It is situated on a 22 hectare site off Nicolson Avenue in the heart of the education and cultural precinct of Whyalla. The campus sees itself as an integral part of the northern and western regions of the state, and attracts many students accordingly.

The smaller campus lends itself to more personalised classes and closer interaction between students and staff. The campus boasts excellent teaching, study support, research and on-campus accommodation facilities. The Whyalla campus library is well stocked with books and periodicals and provides rapid access to the resources of libraries at the University's other campuses. Computing resources are networked to produce a powerful and flexible learning environment.

An active student association ensures that the social, educational and economic needs of students are met. Like all UniSA campuses, the Whyalla campus has a cafe and bar that caters for students. The Students Association often organises bands and other lunchtime and evening entertainment.

The current academic programs available include undergraduate degrees in social work, nursing, business and enterprise. As part of its commitment to equity and access the Whyalla campus also offers a unique bridging program (to be replaced by the new Foundation Studies program in 2006) that prepares students for entry into the university undergraduate programs.

Whyalla campus also has a very active and exciting postgraduate program with opportunities to undertake PhD level studies in Social Sciences at both a full-time, part-time, on-campus and distance education mode. A Master of Rural Health program provides a unique on-line postgraduate level learning environment for health professionals.

The campus is expanding its research, consultancy and business services through collaborative ventures with industry and community organisations across the region. It has a strong research presence with several innovative and unique projects related to rural and regional issues, community strength and wellbeing and applied statistics services.

The campus is keen to work with a variety of education, community and industry groups in order to make the campus as accessible as possible and to broaden the scope of the University.

All enquiries about programs and information related to the University should be directed to the staff located at Campus Central in the main building on campus by calling in or phoning (08) 86476161, faxing (08) 86476190 or emailing: campuscentral.whyalla@unisa.edu.au
