Whyalla Economic Development Board

The Whyalla Economic Development Board Inc. (formally Whyalla Industrial Development Executive Inc.) was formed in 1980 for the purpose of strengthening the economic base of Whyalla.  Today the organisation is an independent Incorporated Association within the South Australian Regional Development Framework, under which the State and Local Government's support 13 regional economic development boards.

WEDB is funded under a Resource Agreement between the State Government and the Corporation of the City of Whyalla.  This support enables WEDB to provide the building blocks for the local economy which has included ensuring the City maintains appropriate infrastructure, skilled labour force, business support and key activities for economic growth.

During the 2006/2007 financial year WEDB, along with several other EDB's, received a twelve (12) month extension to its Resource Agreement to 30 June 2008.  This bring into line all Resource Agreement's across the State.  The Minister for Regional Development, the Honourable Karlene Maywald has outlined that RDB's will be offered a new five (5) year agreement from 1 July 2008, with negotiations currently underway.

The Board consists of representatives from the Whyalla Chamber of Commerce, Whyalla City Council, University of South Australia, TAFE SA Regional, industry, unions, small business and the community.
