cuttlefish concierge

This year’s Cuttlefest will offer something new for those marine lovers who flock to Whyalla from around the world to witness the natural wonder of our Giant Australian Cuttlefish, with SANTOS and Whyalla City Council combining forces to offer a Cuttlefish Concierge.

The pilot program will see a local ambassador on-hand to assist visitors to the site, have a chat and share information and first-hand experience of the cuttlefish, Point Lowly and the Whyalla area.

Local experienced diver and cuttlefish ‘tragic’ Carlo Possagno is taking on the concierge role and is keen to help enhance people’s experience during this year’s Cuttlefest.

We’re thrilled that Carlo will be the very first Cuttlefish Concierge and know that his background, experience and outgoing personality will add to the visitor experience through his knowledge sharing and storytelling.

Carlo is a well-known local who’s been exploring the ocean and the Upper Spencer Gulf region since 1982. If you’ve been lucky enough to visit Whyalla and experience the cuttlefish before, chances are that you will have bumped into Carlo! He began scuba diving in the 1990s, when he discovered his true passion for all things underwater. He is also an amazing underwater photographer.

South Australia is home to a diverse range of marine life, but Carlo is particularly enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the amazing Giant Australian Cuttlefish. He is fascinated by their remarkable intelligence and inquisitive nature, as they exhibit extraordinary abilities in movement, pattern-making and camouflage, even fooling other cuttlefish and foes.

The cuttlefish dive site is the place to be in June and July, with a buzz and vibe like no other.  It’s the perfect place for Carlo, who has a passionate desire to celebrate the cuttlefish migration and raise awareness about these incredible beings. Carlo will be on hand to help you make the most of your exceptional cuttlefish experience - if you see Carlo on site, be sure to say hello and see what you can learn!

The Cuttlefish Concierge project is a collaboration between SANTOS and Whyalla City Council.

Fun Fact: as you travel out to the Cuttlefish Coast Dive Site you are welcomed by one of Carlo’s images:
