The Mount Laura Homestead Museum is holding its feature event for South Australia’s History Festival this weekend.

To celebrate the statewide history festival month, the museum is shining a spotlight on Whyalla’s unique history through key events and dates with its free-admission Unearthing Whyalla’s History display as well as an Exhibition of Vintage Magnetic Recording Equipment.

These pop-up exhibitions and much more will be on offer this Sunday at the Mother’s Day Open Day at the museum on Ekblom Street.

Kicking off at 10am on Sunday (May 12), the Mount Laura Homestead Museum will take on a carnival atmosphere with music, market and food stalls, entertainment from Stormfront Productions, egg & spoon and sack races and other activities for the kids, henna tattoos and Devonshire teas to fit in with the Mother’s Day theme.

The museum exhibits will be open with just a gold coin donation with the old engines cranking up and the blacksmith’s shop firing up.

Museum caretaker and National Trust member,  Jo-Anne Waters said the annual Mother’s Day Open Day was a popular event as families made a day of it with the many activities and things to see.

“We have got two special pop-up exhibitions with Unearthing Whyalla’s History and the Vintage Magnetic Recording Equipment to celebrate South Australia’s History Festival,” Jo-Anne said.

“We are doing a lot of work piecing together Whyalla’s history and identifying links through the significant world events for the Unearthing exhibition and we will keep adding to it throughout the month.

“Sunday’s open day will have something for everyone with the entertainment adding to the historical experience of the museum.”
