and the winner of the poster competition is....

The 2019 Whyalla uneARTh Festival now has a face and an image … several actually.

Whyalla’s Frances Hill has taken out the 2019 uneARTh poster competition with her stunning acrylic painting. Drawing inspiration from the 2019 Adelaide Fringe, which uneARTh is linked, Frances’ creation captures the colour and vibrancy of this year’s festival.

It will now be used to promote the 2019 uneARTh Festival on April 19 and 20 at Ada Ryan Gardens.

In her winning artwork and her own life, Frances perfectly captures the identity theme of this year’s uneARTh Festival. Born and bred in Whyalla to parents who were born and bred in Whyalla, Frances’ connection with our city and her unique identity shines through in her art.

“I live in Whyalla and was born and bred here, same as my parents,” Frances said.

“Art is my passion, I’ve entered the Whyalla Art Prize competition several times and had my work shown in local exhibitions.

“I liked the style of the Adelaide Fringe artwork and I’ve always done bright and colourful stuff.”

Frances works as a receptionist at a clinic the Whyalla hospital and while she has no plans to become a fulltime artist, she takes home $500 for the winning entry and her artwork will now be splashed all over Whyalla and South Australia.

“I wasn’t expecting to win this competition and it is very exciting my art will be now be seen by so many people,” Frances said.

Council’s Arts and Cultural Facilitator, and one of the competition judges, Deb Hughes said the quality of the entries was outstanding but Frances’ entry really echoed the Fringe branding and theme of identity.

“Frances’ entry has a great energy, movement and excitement we want to portray about our festival,” Deb said.

“It shows what our festival has to offer with so many things to see, do and taste.”
